Supersonic Cerenkov

  Ultrasound imaging goes supersonic (Mar 25)

   Physicists in France have generated supersonic

sound waves in human tissue for the first time by

exploiting the acoustic equivalent of Cerenkov

radiation - the light emitted by charged particles

when they travel through a medium faster than the

speed of light in that medium. Matthias Fink and

colleagues at the Laboratoire Ondes et Acoustiques in

Paris say that their results could have applications

for ultrasound imaging in medicine (J Bercoff et al.

2004 Appl. Phys. Lett 84 2202).
