Betreff: Beta Scout Replacement
Does anyone know of a liquid scintillation counter still being sold that
could replace the P-E Beta Scout? We placed an order for a Beta Scout
only to find out they are discontinued. We are looking for a portable
liquid scintillation counter to use on our research vessels to count H-3
and C-14 contamination swipes. It must be portable, 50 pounds or less,
small footprint, easy to use and reliable. If anyone has any ideas,
could you please share them? Thanks for any help you can give.

Roberta,
I do not know the P-E Beta Scout, but I know that at least one really
portable LSC is successfully marketed since years. It is the "Triathler"
from the company "Hidex". It's weight is a few kilos at most (double in
pounds). It is a single PMT counter with the capability to store and analyse
data on a lap top computer and based on multichannel analyzer technology,
which enables to determine the radionuclide present. I have used it
successfully for alpha-beta discrimination measurements, even for very
complicated tasks like short-lived daughters of radon in air to my full
contention and I even had a few years ago such an instrument with me on a
field trip in Saudi Arabia. I cannot give you specifications about tritium
and C-14, but they sure will be no worse than other single PMT instruments.
I know, that it has been used successfully for testing for contamination,
but I do not know the details.
I recommend to look at their home page www.hidex.com or to send an e-mail to
info@hidex.com. You may of course refer to this e-mail and to my name.
Best regards,
Franz
