RE: LSV Disposal Question
Keith and Radsafe Members,
I do not know specifically about Ultima Gold, but when I investigated the
issue some years ago, I found that all of the so called non toxic LSC fluids
contain aromatic hydrocarbons. The so called toxic ones, containing
benzene, xylene, and toluene are considered toxic because they are on
various toxic lists, very common solvents been around and health problems
well known. The newer solvents are as I said, aromatic hydrocarbons meaning
they incorporate one or more benzene rings. I think it is unlikely that any
aromatic hydrocarbon is without risk, and toxicity. That said the "non
toxic" ones are generally less of a concern because they tend to have lower
vapor pressures so you inhale less of it.
Bottom line IMO they should all be handled with care and the "non toxic"
ones are generally an improvement.

Dear Radsafers, just to pass on something that's come to my attention
recently:
"however the real benefit of using ultima
Gold is that employees are not handling potentially hazardous materials"
Don't know about Ultima Gold, but many of the biodegradable cocktails
contain ethoxylates. These are apparently "pseudoestrogens". Something
else to worry about ??
