Because almost of all of the ice in the Greenland ice cap is not floating,

it is grounded on the rock of Greenland.  That is also true of a smaller,

but still large fraction of the ice in the Antarctic ice cap.

Yes, but that ground is below water level.

If you were to draw a map of Greenland without the ice and only the parts

above water level, you would get just a string of islands roughly outlining

the current shape of the island.

However, the ice sheet is so thick, in the middle, that its well above what

would protrude, were it to be just floating.....
