Re: " Scientists Say Dirty Bomb Would Be a Dud "
Dear Jaro:
Dear Jaro,
Thank you for your message,
Almost 17 years were lapsed from the Goiania Accident and since the first
moment until now I repeat: -- the lessons from that radiological accident
have not been sufficiently learned until now. I have no doubt to affirm if
another scenario along the lines of the Goiania accident were to occur, most
probably the same misunderstanding will be happen and the competent
authority, the organization dedicated to remediation and the media will
repeat the same mistakes.
In particular going to my and your point, I would like to remember that we
are discussing considering Goiania an abnormal event, not a normal
situation. In Goiania there were 20 correspondents, press, radio and TV, and
they were impatient to listen many persons, and such persons were not green,
however were against the Brazilian nuclear programme, and they took the
opportunity to criticize the Regulatory Authority; others were scientists
that also did not agree with our activity in Goiania. All of them
respectable persons, however this brought many confusion in terms of
conflicts of information, distortion and misunderstandings, being one of the
the main causes for the anxiety and discrimination.
You are right on your final "I think there is ample blame to go around --
both to the press and to" Governmental incompetence to get the space" in the
press.
About the Physicians in Goiania, they were in strike and had refused to
attend personal - Lesson and more lessons. The nursery were not in strike,
however were afraid and decided to strike - more lessons to be learned.
However I would like to remind that my initial question was: "The Goiania's
accident caught Brazil by surprise, this will not be the case of a RDD - -
USA has a high degree of education, comparing many other countries. My
question to colleagues: Isn't American citizen being educated to deal with
this fact?
The population of Goiania was not educated to deal with a radiological
emergency, that opportunity, and I do believe today again in many parts of
the world
