Betreff: Re: Licensing Radioactive Material Offshore Africa

I received some inquiries from a government official there about

regulation of well logging RA. It seems they stumbled on our website,

and thought we knew something about it. That was about a year ago, and

I told the person contacting us that I was sure NRC or IAEA had resource

material to help them set up a program. The entire interchange struck

me as bizarre at the time.

I may throw in my two Euro-cents of knowledge, which is fortunately a

little more than two US-cents….. Having once worked in regulation I

believe I could give some common guidelines.

If you want to import radioactive sources or material into a country,

then you have to comply with the countries legislation. If this country

happens not to have any written legislation on that yet, it should be

the duty of the importer to check with the countries legislators or

authorities, what they request for this case. Of course the respective

authorities will find it easier to allow import, if the radionuclides

and sources in question conform to international rules. So Jose

Rozenthals hints are most valuable. Any application for import should

therefore include the confirmation that the radionuclides in question

conform to internationally well established legislation, whether IAEA,

NRC or European Union. There is hardly any difference.

Another question is, whether the application is within the borders of

the country. If it is offshore and outside the confirmed zone, you might

face a different problem.

If your company succeeded to gain permission for drilling and exploiting

from this country, the question of importing some radioactive sources

should be a ridiculous small thing. Use your companies lawyers and

anyway according to unconfirmed and unreliable information envelopes

containing a number of papers depicting dead presidents should work……..
