RE: Background radiation levels in U.S.
Alan and Radsafers,
Maps of terrestrial gamma radioactivity for the U.S. can be found at
http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/radon/DDS-9.html
>From this page the reader can go to four pages as follows:
* Download a map of estimated potassium concentrations for the
conterminous U.S. (68 k)
* Download a map of equivalent uranium-238 concentrations for the
conterminous U.S. (76 k)
* Download a map of equivalent thorium-232 concentrations for the
conterminous U.S. (71 k)
* Download a map of estimated total gamma exposure for the conterminous
U.S. (78 k)
These maps were derived from airborne radiometric surveys conducted by DOE
in the late 1970s as part of the National Uranium Resources Evaluation
Program by Joe Duval of the USGS.
Such maps should not be used to estimate the terrestrial gamma activity or
K, U or Th content of surface soils and rocks of a small area (like a
residential or a commercial property) but can be used to describe the
background variation of larger areas like counties.

Subject: Background radiation levels
Does anyone on the list know where to find a map of the U.S. with
information
on background radiation levels?
