Description
Located in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University is a bold, innovative,

Cornell University is seeking a Director to lead, promote, and support a 
comprehensive, customer-sensitive, campus environmental health and safety 
program for the University. Cornell University conducts extensive research 
and experimentation activities including animal, nanotechnology, and 
genomics. This position provides leadership in the development and 
management of comprehensive health and safety programs in support of the 
university mission. The University, set in rural Ithaca, NY, is a 
residential campus with a student population of over 19,000 and surrounded 
by several municipalities.

The Director is responsible for providing professional leadership and 
administrative direction to a staff of 59 as well as maintaining a budget 
of $4.9 million including seven fee for service programs.  The Director 
also serves as University Safety Officer. The Director is responsible for 
developing, maintaining, and promoting policies, procedures, and programs 
necessary to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, 
staff and visiting public; to work with other campus entities to protect 
the University against losses; and to ensure that university operations are 
in compliance with pertinent local, Federal and New York State 
environmental health and safety codes and regulations. The Director reports 
to the Associate Vice President of Campus and Business Services.

Qualifications
Must possess a Bachelors in either physical or biological sciences or 
engineering and a Masters degree in a related scientific, management, or 
health and safety field such as environmental health, industrial hygiene, 
preventive medicine, safety engineering. Must have 10+ years demonstrated 
experience in the management of comprehensive environmental health and 
safety programs at a comparable organization. Must have 3-5 years managing 
at a senior supervisory level. Must be able to effectively communicate with 
all major constituencies. Must have demonstrated experience effectively 
leading a complex organization. Must be familiar with state and federal 
regulations affecting higher education. Board certification in a recognized 
professional health and safety discipline such as industrial hygiene (CIH), 
safety professional (CSP) and health physics society (CHP) is 
preferred.  Demonstrated ability of leading effective change.
