Sounds like TLD. We (nuclear power plant in Sweden) had a sharp increase on 
a TLD dosimeter some 20 years ago. I called and asked why because I was 
doing statistics on the readdings. Answer: Tons of snow over it had trapped 
radon...

Could something like that be the explanation for this case as well?
