[ RadSafe ] Overcoming America's nuclear power phobia

Dr. Weiner once again has highlighted an important fact: "the Nevada
Nuclear waste Project Office has got quite a lot of DOE money." Well
actually its nuclear electric ratepayer money, but thats a minor quibble.

That fact is part of a professional politician's golden dream, and it just
keeps getting better. The Nevada politicians get the money, they get much
more national attention than they would otherwise get, they got to hand
pick a member of the NRC Commission (did any other state ever get to do
that?), and they get a political cause that they can use locally for their
personal advantage. For them, the longer they can drag out the process,
the more money they get for the state and the more power they get for
themselves. Once the process is complete, almost all of the personal
advantages for politicians go away.

America doesn't have nuclear power phobia, a teeny, tiny, itty bitty
fraction of the population of America does. If America had nuclear power
phobia, people would not flock to live next to an operating nuclear power
plant (often happens) and the people who lived near one initially would all
move away (has never happened) as soon as it started up (especially since
thier property values go up).
