Disposal of Uranium Waste
I am trying to make sense out of the disposal regulations for uranium and
uranium contaminated materials and am hoping someone can clarify the waste
classification for Uranium. The material that I have is in some cases
depleted but for the most part has a slight enrichment of 2-3% U-235 and is
technically SNM even though in its present condition it can not undergo
criticality (basically its contaminated trash and dirt).
In 10CFR61 most wastes are classed as A, B or C. However, there appears
to be no classification for uranium. They do have categories for
transuranics-does this mean that the NRC is including the Uranium as a
transuranic or are the uranium wastes covered by another section of
10CFR ? If it is covered by another chapter can you tell me which one it
is ? I looked through 10CFR70 and the guidance there only pertains to
shipping the material but not disposal.
Also does anyone have experience with which disposal sites will take
uranium and uranium contaminated materials; do they have their own
limitations and what restrictions in terms of activity do they put on
the shipment. I do know that one firm (Envirocure) will take activities
up to 2000 pCi/g provided its large volumes of material. Looking for
information on what others have done to get rid of their waste.
Sorry for the length-Thanks in advance for any advice or leads you can give
me.
