fuel rods and north sea

     Steve,
There may be a contact near you at American Nuclear
Society Wash DC Local Section. Chairman Robert Sweeney in
     Bethesda (301) 652-2500 fax(301) 652-0338. The information
sources at USNRC may be of assistance, or at USDOE.

So far as I know, no country outside the Iron Curtain has
deliberately disposed of Fuel Rods at sea. It of course is
     difficult to prove a non-existance.

Typically Intermediate Level liquid waste has been released from
UKAEA reprocessing plant into the Irish Sea, objected to by many.
Lading to various Greenpeace publicity missions over the years.
This maybe the source of the inquiry.

Readers Digest had a review of the Soviet disposal of old
submarines into the Arctic with cores still aboard -- written
last winter. This has upset many. Also reported is a 'research
submarine' sunk in narrow strait between Sweden? and Denmark?
with concern about leaking plutonium from two torpedos.

Some Scandinavian countries propose location of their Ultimate
HLW waste deep under the seabed, in location where they expect to
eventually be under dry land in 10s of centuries.

In USA, disposal of LOW level radwaste into the ocean was
forbidden in early 1960s by Act of Congress, which lead to
opening of Beatty NV site etc. The USA Generic EIS on Commmercial
HLW Disposal, finalized October 1980, did consider all sorts of
disposal ideas including space shots and deep-sea disposal.
Scripps Institute of Oceanography was involved in the study.

                .. Regards,
