Re: U.S. Air Force Health Physicists
Troy:
I received your phone call inquiring about Air Force health phyisics
positions. I presume from the date on this message that you have already
gotten your answer to other AF health physicists on RADSAFE. I will be
calling you in the near future. You mentioned that you were referred by
Capt Dan Caputo, our European HP, to me. I also understand that you may
have gotten a message from a Dr. John Leonovitch, PNL, in response to your
original message. Quite a network we have. At any rate, some of what I
will relate may have already been imparted to you by one of these
individuals. Presently we have approximately 46 HPs on active duty to
fill 42 authorized positions. The additional 4 above authorized are or
will be back in school for MS and PhD studies. Of the 42 positions, 9 are
specifically for medical physicists (diagnostic and therapeutic) at the
Air Forces 5 main medical centers. The remaining folks are primarily HPs,
although some are research oriented at the Air Force Laser Laboratory.
The majority of our HPs are stationed in San Antonio, Texas at Armstrong
Laboratory. This facility operates a consulting group, full-up
radioanalytical section and USAF Dosimetry Program. Also in San Antonio
we have regulatory positions associated with management of our Master
Materials License (operate like a quasi agreement state) and with our Low
Level Radioactive Waste Program Office. Our next concentration of HPs is
in Albequerque, primarily at the installation level where they deal with a
wide variety of ionizing and nonionizing radidiation problems. Also in
Albequerque we have HPs associated with the Air Force Safety AGency
Nuclear Surety Division, Defense Nuclear Agency Insterservice Nuclear
Weapons School, and our inspection function. Finally, we have positions
overseas in Japan and Germany as well as several other installations in
the US. Hope this brief summary helps. Will be talking to yo soon. Don
