Blood is irradiated with a pretty healthy (unhealthful) dose of gamma radiation prior to transfusion in immunosurpressed patients. The irradiation kills the immune response of the blood so that it does not attack the recipient. It prevents the reaction called Graft versus Host Disease. I think 25 Gy is a typical dose. Dale
