Chemical & Radiological Risk

Regulatory constraints, health and safety considerations and insurance
requirements all dictate that you address both risks when dealing with "mixed
wastes".
The EPA has specific regulations for handling and storage of chemicals while the
NRC or agreement state has regulations regarding the radiological hazards. Both
regulatory bodies will regulate a "mixed waste" independently and in conflict of
the other.
The DOT has outlined which materials in their opinion carry the greatest
hazards. Refer to 49 CFR 173.2a. This section defines which hazard class takes
precedence when materials having more than one hazard class are shipped.
Radioactive takes precedence over all materials. The exception is a limited
quantity of radioactive material. In almost all cases the other hazard class
will also be indicated on the container and paperwork..
Insurance companies do not have guidance for "mixed wastes". They require that
both hazards be covered.
