Hi,

we are using Am-Be source here at the site:

I expect that construction of a source may influence its emmission rate and
its energy spectrum of neutrons. Recently, we have finished a Bonner sphere
spectrometry based investigation of our neutron fields (with our friends in
Chalk River, a paper submitted to the HP Journal) work at our site. Part of
this was a measurement of our Am-Be source. This source features 1 mCi of
241Am. Its neutron emmission rate is 2.36 +- 2% neutrons/sec. The
unscattered published spectrum of an Am-Be source can be found in Griffith,
R. V., et al., IAEA TRS No. 318, 1990. (If needed, I can send you this
normalized fluence spectrum in an ASCII form.)

The ICRP26 based H*(10) rate (based on the conversion coeffiecients by
Wagner, S. R. et al.) at the distance of 1m (no scattering, neutrons only)
is calculated (over the published spectrum) to be 26.0 microSv/h.

Similarly, the ICRP60 based H*(10) rate (based on the conversion
coefficients by Siebert, B. R. L, Schuhmacher, H.) is 26.7 microSv/h.

The Bonner sphere measurements in a very low scattering area yielded in a
52-bin neutron fluence rate spectrum with the following results:
ICRP26 based H*(10) rate = 25.2 microSv/h.
ICRP60 based H*(10) rate = 26.3 microSv/h.

Quite impressive, don't you think?

Hope this helps. For any other info, please, feel free to e-mail.

Best regards,
(also on behalf of my friends in Chalk River, namely Josane N. and Tony W.,
this was their effort.)

Miroslav.
