FOOD IRRADIATION AND THE PRESERVATION OF VIT. C -Reply

Kimberly:

You could contact Food Technologies Inc. in Mulberry Florida, just
outside Tampa. They used to go by the name of Vindicator. At present,
they are the only company in the U.S. irradiating food (except for
spices which are also being irradiated at other plants).

They usually only irradiate bulk (i.e. truckload) shipments but will
make exceptions, on occasion, for science projects like yours.

The East Tennessee Chapter and the local ANS folk once had a joint
meeting at which almost the entire meal had been irradiated. This
kind of meal can be set up for other chapters, or perhaps, schools.
Food Technologies Inc. will sometimes provide a speaker for the
event. Good fun!

If all else fails, contact me; ORISE has an irradiator that can do
the job if its relatively small. It would take us two days to
irradiate a couple of oranges to 100,000 rad if thats the dose you
want.

Best wishes, and good luck on the project.
