Biomedical Mixed Waste Study
FYI:
The National Low-Level Waste Management Program has distributed a
document entitled "National Institutes of health: Mixed Waste
Minimization and Treatment, DOE/LLW-218, August 1995".
This document results from a request for technical assistance from
the Appalachian States Low-Loevel Radioactive Waste Commission.
It reviews the mixed waste problems common to most biomedical
research labs (gel eletrophoresis, DNA sequencing, LSC, etc...) and
possible ways to minimize mixed waste streams.
It is slightly encouraging, in that waste streams can be minimized,
but it also serves as a reminder that many facilities may be handling
mixed waste without being aware of it.
I'd recommend it to any major biomedical research institution.
Anyway, the report was distributed to the state radiation
programs and waste compacts. The cover letter indicates that
questions or requests for copies can be forwarded to Lockheed
Martin @ INEL:
