Biohazard from urine bioassay samples

Radsafers,

Currently we handle Urine bioassay samples as a potential biohazard. This
means that a seperate area of the office is maintained as a biohazard area,
and materials used in this area are disposed of as biohazards. Please note
that the urine samples are not opened or analyzed in this area. Samples are
received from participants, stored, and prepared for shipment to the analysis
lab. The technician handling the samples wears gloves and a lab coat.

I don't think this level of control is warrented and wanted to see how others
are controling similar activities. A similar situation exists for fecal
samples, which are infrequently handled(1-2 samples/year). Please respond to me
directly and I will post a summary on RADSAFE. Thanks
