New DOT Regs

{Original Msg: 'New DOT reg. changes' from <radsafe@romulus.ehs.uiuc.edu>

{I hope someone can help me figure out the requirements under the new DOT
{regs to ship limited quantities of radioactive material domestically.
{
{Researchers ship small quantities (microcurie amounts in microliter
{volumes) of S-35, H-3, C-14, I-125, or P-32 to other researchers across the
{country. The standard shipping container is a box that originally
{contained radioactive material.
{
{I'm familiar with the changes in the A1 & A2 values. Where I get hazy is
{what kind of container is now required (strong tight out the
{window?), documentation, proper shipping name, UN number etc.
{
{Any help tp lift the veil will be greatly appreciated!
{
{Thanks in advance.

Al,
A couple of VA HP types have attempted to translate the new regs into
English for the rest of us. The strong tight box is now, I beleive a
IP-1 [industiral package] and although there has been some additional
verbage added to the "strong tight" description, I do not think there
have been any substantive changes. I think if you meet limited qty
you still are exempt from shipping paper requirements and don't need to
worry about the proper shipping name and UN#. If you know Dr. Bill
Tuttle VA Portland he is one of the people that wrote the info sheet.

I can send you a copy if you'll send me your address.

Of course this will come under the heading of free advice, worth what
you pay for it. VA and U.S. Government don't vouch for it, etc.
