Radiation Oncology Dilemma



This is precisely the reason that Part 20 contains provision
for exemption to portions of Part 20.  This was even an
example of an appropriate use of the exemption clause that
I beleive was discussed in the statements of consideration. 
It is clear that:

1.   due to the advanced age of the spouse, the risk of
developing cancer as a result of the exposure is extremely
low;

2.   there is benefit to both the patient and the spouse;

3.   and the exposure would be voluntary and informed.

This seems like a case that could justify an exemption from
the public dose limits.  I don't know if it has been done, but it
is worth a try.
