Subject: DOT Regulations
The DOT regulations had an exemption for physicians transporting
radioactive material, as I recall. Does this exemption still exist? If
so, can someone please cite the 49CFR.
Also, if a limited quantity of radioactive material is packaged according
to 49 CFR 173.421 (requirements for excepted packages) can the material
be transported in a private vehicle, taxicab, city bus, subway train,
etc.? My reading says that excepted material is exempt from any
restrictions on the type of vehicle.

All opinions are well reasoned and insightful.
Needless to say they are not the opinion of my
employer. - Paraphrased from Michael Feldman.
Mr. Lambert,
I'm not aware of any relief provided by the U.S.D.O.T. for physicians
transporting radioactive material in their practice, other than the
caveat that they do not regulate intrastate transportation of
hazardous materials, yet!(vol61,no.55,p11484). 10CFR71.9, however,
does contain a paragraph, exempting physicians(sic)Any physician
licensed by a State todispense drugs in the practice of medicine is
exempt from 71.5 with respect to transport by the physician of
licensed material for the use in the practice of medicine. However,
any physician operating under this exemption must be licensed under
10 CFR part 35 or the equivalent Agreement State regulations.
Good Luck!
