Re: He-3 & the Navy

On board nuclear vessels, tritium is not sampled on a daily basis
for a number of reasons, a few of those being, a lack of instrumentation to
detect the 18 keV beta(a liquid scintillator counting setup would take up a
lot of room and I doubt it could handle the use and the abuse aboard a navy
vessel), a very tight primary system, use of precipitators, negative
ventilation, etc,. One exception to this may be the special radiochemistry
sample that is obtained every so often. Tritium maybe analyzed for in this
sample IF it will give useful information about reactor core performance. I
tend to believe that it not even analyzed for in this particular sample. Are
they any radsafers out there who worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard to to
indicate if tritium analysis was performed on the special radiochemical
sample.
