Why the 3 at the end of the MDA expression?  I believe it is a correction
factor to take into account that the Poisson distribution better describes
the statistics at very low count rates.  It is only important at very low
total counts such as might be observed in low level alpha spectroscopy where
the total counts may be as low as 25.  For hundreds or thousands of counts
the term is insignificant and can be ignored.
