TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Career or Career-Conditional/Full-Time

DUTIES:  The incumbent will be assigned to a Division within ATSDR.
 Depending on assignment, the incumbent may perform one or more of the
following duties:  Responsible for evaluating, providing information,
or developing hypotheses regarding the pathways of chemical exposure to
humans; Prepares and participates in the development of major portions of
public health assessments, petitioned public health assessments, health
consultations and/or related activities concerning potential or actual
adverse health effects associated with exposure to chemicals and hazardous
substances; Provides assessments of the health impact posed by releases or
potential releases of hazardous substances into the environment, especially
in conjunction with emergency responses and health consultations; Develops
recommendations for mitigating or preventing adverse health impacts posed by 

releases of hazardous substances; Serves on a multidisciplinary team,
responsible for evaluating, providing information, or developing hypotheses
regarding the pathways of hazardous chemical exposure to humans; Conducts
activities associated with toxicological profile development; Provides
technical
and scientific advice and assistance to a variety of organizations,
agencies, and individuals concerned with environmental factors which may
pose a threat to human health.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Applicants must have successfully completed a
full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading
to a bachelor's or higher degree with major study in an academic field
relating to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work
of the position,  applicants must have one year of specialized experience
equivalent to the next lower grade in the

Federal service.  Specialized experience is that which is directly related
to the position and which had equipped the applicant with the particular
knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties
of the
position, such as providing information, developing hypotheses, conducts
activities associated with toxicological profile and providing technical and 

scientific advice.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE

For the GS-09 level, successful completion of 2 full years of progressively
higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree
may be considered fully qualifying.

For the GS-11 level, successful completion of 3 full years of progressively
higher level graduate education of Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree may
be considered fully qualifying.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

KSAs are the specific characteristics that applicants should possess in
order to perform the major duties of the position.  Applicants should
address the specific KSAs on a separate sheet of paper as an attachment to
your application.  KSAs identified as (M) are considered to be critical to
the position and are considered to be mandatory for qualifications.  KSAs
identified as (D) are considered to be desirable.
