 The key point here is that the work does
 not require a hood in the first place.
 Hence it does not matter what the effect 
 on the hood performance is.  If you can
 do it on the bench top, you can do it in
 a non-performing hood (unless your bureaucratic
 procedures prevent you from doing the logical, 
 in which case the fix is self-evident).
 
 In situations where the hood is needed because
 of the quantity in use, then you certainly have
 to fix the problem.  But given the gross disturbance
 to the flow patterns it probably is not fixable
 unless you have a relatively deep hood.  Hence a
 total enclosure is your only option.
 
 A little risk adds spice to life.
