Re: nuclear power/nuclear waste

ERIC GOLDIN recently posted what I consider an excellent question
..."WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STOP USING OUR AIR AS A SEWER?" ... Perhaps,
the answer is: WHEN THE PUBLIC FEARS SOMETHING -- LIKE LACK OF OXYGEN,
OR, INCREASED TEMPERATURE, OR, DECREASED OZONE -- WORSE THAN THEY FEAR
     NUCLEAR POWER.

In the words of Jimmy Buffet, " ... answers are the easy part,
questions raise the doubt ... " or,

as Jeff Beck sez, "On the issues of the environment, much is being
said; but, nothing is being done."

Susan McElrath forwarded a question from a Dr. Leslie London and
here's one early morning response: The question about nuclear
power plant waste HAS been clearly answered but some folks just
don't like the answer. So I'll ask an alternative question to
the good Dr. London: WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STOP USING OUR AIR AS
A SEWER? Waste from nuclear power is low volume and isolatable
from the environment. Wastes from virtually all other forms of
electricity generation are high volume, dispersed throughout the
environment, and don't decay with time. The estimated maximum
radiation exposure rates to members of the public from low level
radwaste and spent fuel disposal are small fractions of
background and of the average exposure from medical sources you
prescribe, Dr. London (and even small fractions of the public
radiation exposure from fossil fuel combustion). So that's why
proponents push nuclear power as the not perfect but certainly an
environmentally benign means for electricity generation.
