ionizing radiation for water treatment

Dear collegues,

I know that research has been done to destroy chlorinated hydrocarbons in
drinking water by treatment with ionizing radiation. As far as I know this
method works.

My question is, whether there is any large scale, commercial use of this
method known. Moreover I would be interested, whether legislation in any
country would permit such treatment.

I need this information urgently for a meeting on water quality and
treatment methods next week.
