NO, it wasn't.  A small amount of radioactivity, maybe.  Or did they mean
that a few alpha particles and six or seven gamma rays escaped into the woods?

Are not words the primary tools used by journalists in their profession?  Is
it too much to ask that they learn to use them properly?  If you needed to
do a survey for alpha contamination and chose a GM counter with a thick
window, would you not be fired?  If a journalist confused the terms
'witness' and 'suspect' in a murder trial, would they not be terminally
embarrassed?  <end rant mode>
