SALARY: GS-9: $31,248.00 per annum
GS-11: $37,808.00 per annum

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Career or Career-Conditional/Full-Time

DUTIES: Provides technical advice to ATSDR headquarters, regional
operations staff, and personnel of the Department of Health and Human
Services and other Federal, state and local health, environmental and
natural resource agencies on problems associated with exposures to
radioactive environmental contaminants. Maintains scientific liaison with
other professionals from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other Federal and state
agencies to remain cognizant of the latest developments of health physics
as it relates to branch functions. Participates in the evaluation of
hazardous waste sites to include recommendations concerning site specific
environmental and human biologic sampling strategies. Develops, prepares,
and presents technical materials for publication and distribution to other
federal agencies, state and local governments, and the public. Incumbent
will be responsible for coordinating site-related activities within ATSDR
and with other government agencies. Develops site-specific action plans and
schedules, and implements required activities at the site. Participates in
public meetings, workshops, seminars, and committee meetings that relate to
hazardous substance exposure, environmental, or public health issues.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have successfully completed a
full four year course of study in an accredited college or university
leading to a bachelor's degree in natural science or engineering that
included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering,
radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or
calculus OR a combination of education and experience; or certification as
a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus
appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding
of sciences applicable to health physics. Applicants must also have one
year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower grade 
level
in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is that which is directly
related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the
particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform
the duties of the position, such as experience with exposure to radioactive
environmental contaminants, providing scientific liaison with other
agencies, etc.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION:

At the GS-9 level, 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate
education or master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B, or
J.D.)

At the GS-11 level, 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate
education of Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
KSAs are the specific characteristics that applicants should possess in
order to perform the major duties of the position. Applicants should

your application. KSAs identified as (M) are considered to be critical to
the position and are considered to be mandatory for qualifications. KSAs
identified as (D) are considered to be desirable.
