I've checked out a number of field gamma spectrometers. The Exploranium
one is very good, but there are others available. Two large manufacturers
in the US are Canberra and Eberline, both of whom have started to sell
portable gamma spectrometers within the last few years. I don't have an
address or phone number at hand, but they should be easy enough to find.
Several years ago I also saw a very small unit made by a Canadian company
called Bubbletech - again I don't have a phone number or address but I'm
sure some other radsafer will.

I've found that the main differences between the units boils down to ease
of use vs. sophistication of analysis. The Exploranium unit is very simple
to use, relatively small and rugged, while the others offer more advanced
analysis tools, and are less rugged and user-friendly. If you want a
spectroscopist to analyze individual spectra in detail, I probably wouldn't
go with the Exploranium unit. However, if you want to deal with a large
number of spectra and need only simple concentration data, the Exploranium
unit may be your best bet.
