ANNOUNCEMENT
ABCC/RERF 50th Anniversary Symposium
June 13-14, 1997, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC
The Board on Radiation Effects Research and the Commission on Life
Sciences of the National Research Council, invite you to attend a
symposium titled "ABCC/RERF: Commemorating the First 50 Years and Looking
to the Future." The symposium will commemorate the special anniversary of
the unique binational study of the health of the atomic-bomb survivors in
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The study is conducted by the Radiation Effects
Research Foundation, originally the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. The
symposium is sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences/National
Research Council and the two sponsoring agencies of the RERF: the US
Department of Energy and the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. A
Friday morning commemorative ceremony will honor 50 years of research, the
results of which have served as an important basis for radiation risk
assessment throughout the world. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning
will be devoted to scientific sessions: Cancer Risk Estimation, Molecular
and Genetic Basis of Cancer, Noncancer End Points, RERF Dosimetry, Studies
of the F1 Population, and Training and Collaborations. At each session,
RERF staff will update symposium attendees on the latest RERF results and
plans, and scientists from several institutions will serve as keynote
speakers and as panelists to discuss new developments in the subject. For
