First Announcement and Call For Papers
Risk-Based Performance Assessment and Decision Making
Sponsored by the
Eastern Washington Section,
Environmental Sciences Division, and the
Fuel Cycle and Waste Management Division
of the American Nuclear Society
April 5-8, 1998 - Pasco, Washington
The 1998 Topical Meeting on Risk-based Performance Assessment and
Decision Making will address several important issues related to the use
of performance and risk assessments in making decisions regarding
nuclear facility safety, waste management and environmental restoration.
A focus of the Symposium will be on the methods used for conducting
performance and risk assessments and how those assessments can be used
to make better decisions. Of particular interest is the interaction of
the risk practitioners and the decision makers who utilize the results
of performance and risk assessments. Environmental, safety and health
risks as well as programmatic risks will be addressed. The Symposium
will feature a plenary session, invited speakers, case studies, and
contributed papers of interest to scientists, engineers, decision
makers, regulators, and the general public.
Contributed papers should focus on the successful application of risk-
based decision making to meet the needs of the U.S. Department of
Energy, in their waste management and environmental clean-up mission.
Papers addressing performance and risk assessment methodologies
currently in use or development are being requested. Results of recent
applications of performance/risk assessment methods and the decision
making processes that have been instituted to accept and use
performance/risk assessment information are particularly encouraged.
Papers discussing successful applications of risk-based performance
assessments both within the nuclear industry as well as other non-
nuclear industries are welcome.
Authors are requested to submit brief (not more than 1500 words)
summaries on one of the topics described below (other, related, topics
may be considered as well):
