Re: Radioactive Source Recovery Program
DOE will finally be in the business of accepting unwanted neutron
sources and other sealed sources per their responsibility under the Low
Level Waste Amendments Act of 1985 (10CFR61.55, GTCC), if favorable
comments are received in Washington. The Radioactive Source Recovery
Program (RSRP) is a project I have been working on for some time. So
far, the DOE is only accepting sealed sources on an emergency basis.
However, if the RSRP is fully funded in FY-99, those licensees who wish
to take advantage of the program will have an outlet for their unwanted
GTCC sealed sources. If you would like to see the program plan it is
available at:
www.em.doe.gov/pbs/n_60.html Once there you have to click on "Next"
to see the doc.
More info is available on: www.lanl.gov/NeutronSources/
The important thing is that DOE hear from the anyone interested in
seeing that these unwanted sources are picked up and removed from
licensees who no longer need them. Such a program can do nothing but
reduce the risk to the public and improve the end of life management of
sealed sources. Comments are needed on this program if it is to be
funded. Comments should be sent prior to July 18, 1997 and should be
directed to:
