RE: Chem-Nuclear Article in "The State" Newspaper
The Midwest Compact recently halted the siting process for the host
state of Ohio, relieved Ohio of it's responsibilities as a host state
and is dismantling the siting process. The Compact cited a reduction in
waste volumes, continued access to existing disposal site and high
potential costs (June 97 Compact Newsletter).
The article on Barnwell would seem to imply that "continued access..."
may be in jeopardy. It seems as though South Carolina will be quite
happy to "kill the goose that laid the golden egg" in a quest for more
gold. Envirocare only seems to be an option if one has large volumes of
waste. We do ship our NARM waste to Hanford but that still leaves our
facility with only Barnwell as an option for by-product material that we
can not DIS.
