Discovery Channel to air segment on LANL technology onboard Cassini
Los Alamos technology onboard the Cassini spacecraft will be featured
in a segment scheduled to be broadcast tonight on cable television's
Discovery Channel. Laboratory scientists led the development of two
scientific sensors that will provide key measurements of the space
environment around Saturn when the Cassini spacecraft reaches the ringed
planet in 2004.
Lab scientists also developed and manufactured the heat sources for
Cassini's radioisotopic thermoelectric generators, which use heat from
the decay of plutonium-238 to generate electricity, and other heat
sources that warm critical spacecraft components.
The Discover News show airs at 7 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time (MDT). It
is rebroadcast at 11 a.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
