Salary: Commensurate with Experience
 The Supervisor reports to the RSO/Assistant RSO, and is responsible for
the radioactive waste disposal program for the Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center and NYS Psychiatric Institute, the Audubon Business and
Technology Center and the Russ Berrie Medical Science Pavilion. In
addition, the position includes responsibility for radiation safety
surveillance and audits of laboratories using radioactive material and
for the personnel dosimetry and bioassay program. Specific
responsibilities include: Oversee pickup, inspection and disposal of
radioactive waste in compliance with the NYC Department of Health, NYS
Department of Transportation, NYS Department of Environmental
Conservation and burial site regulations. Conduct inspection of waste
containers, including labeling and packaging. Coordinate the
transportation of waste to burial sites. Maintain computerized waste
disposal record-keeping system, including provisions for billing,
reimbursement and establishing liability. Ability to organize and manage
a multi-task program with short deadlines, and the ability to supervise
a technical staff using a team approach. The position requires
performance of some calibration of instrumentation, auditing and
surveillance of all areas of the Medical Center where radioactive
material or radiation producing equipment is used. Handle
decontamination procedures and patient surveys. Responsible for Red Bag
waste monitoring for the NYS Psychiatric Institute, Allen Pavilion,
Audubon Business and Technology Center, Russ Berrie Medical Science
Pavilion, Presbyterian Hospital and University. Additionally, applicant
must be able to respond to emergency calls during off-hours and work
occasional overtime. Heavy drum lifting may be required while assisting
the technicians.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training
and experience, plus two years of related experience. Training and
experience in hazardous waste management, including supervisory
experience. The applicant should possess good verbal and written
communication skills, have a working knowledge of radiation safety
regulations, and be proficient in the use of health physics
instrumentation. Computer skills, including the ability to utilize RSO
management software and contribute to the development of the RSO website
is desired.
