In addition to the other ideas already posted, you may want to consider
the posibility that the trailers and fence posts may have been welded
with Thoriated welding rods. The rods are typically < 2% by weight
Thorium.
In addition, it is likely that some of the metal used in the fence post
may have contained NORM when it was recycled by the steel mill. If so,
the NORM most likely came from an oil and gas production pipe. You will
typically see Ra-226 & Ra-228 daughters.
If the isotopes look like DU daughters and the metal is very "new", you
may have received some metal produced by one of the Japanese steel mills
that purchased all of the scrap metal from Kuwait at the end of the
Gulf War. I think it may be too early for this material to be showing up
in the US, but it will certainly be a problem in the future.
