hello radsafers!
A question regarding the annual inspection (required by JCAHO for
diagnostic radiology departments) of lead aprons, thyroid shields, and
gloves: is it necessary to fluoro the lead apparel to check for
structural integrity of the lead?
Can the lead aprons and thyroid shields be placed on a flat surface and
physically examined for cracks etc. without the use of fluoroscopy (feel
for cracks, bends, and folds)?
The point being here that a hospital with a large number of such apparel
would require extensive fluoroscopy time and unnecessary personnel
exposure. Is there any literature available that supports the use of
fluoro only after the lead apparel has been deemed questionable by way
of physical examination (i.e. does every apron, thyroid shield, and
glove require fluoro examination)?
