Re: Request suggestions in handling Ra-226 contaminated soil

We have managed large quantities of soil with about 10 times the Ra
concentration you have without too much trouble. With regard to disposal,
process history could be very important. Where does the Ra come from? If
from an ore, you might be able to dispose of it as NORM if that is any
advantage. Also, if from ores, be aware of other elements such as Th in
controlling air concentration due to dust. If NOT from ores, how is the Ra
distributed w.r.t. particle size, again if you have a dry product with
dust. There remain few options with regard to disposal if your research
concentrates the Ra in some waste product. Radon should not be much of a
problem in a ventilated room--not much total Ra.
