German nuclear shipment arrives in Ahaus
No more need to be concerned with actions taken against the German
train carrying the waste shipment, most recently targeted by
anti-nuclear protestors. Now all they need to complete is the burial,
in as safe an environment as possible.
Friday March 20, 1:43 pm Eastern Time
AHAUS, Germany, March 20 (Reuters) - A controversial shipment of
nuclear waste arrived on Friday in the northern German town of Ahaus
near the Dutch border where it will be buried in a nearby storage
dump, police said.
About 30,000 police were deployed across the country to protect the
shipment of six steel containers of highly radioactive waste from
thousands of anti-nuclear protesters who were trying to hinder the
transport during the 15-hour journey.
The shipment of 60 tonnes of spent fuel rods reached Ahaus, a small
market town north of Cologne, shortly after 7:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) after
a 400-km (250-mile) journey from the southern town of Walheim.
It will take about one more hour to reach the dump, 3.5 km (two miles)
outside the village railway station.
The train entered an area ringed by police. The six steel containers
of waste will travel the final leg of their journey from Ahaus station
to a storage depot later under heavy guard, officials said.
The train had been stopped just 10 km (seven miles) into its journey
by protesters chained to the rails, who were cut free. It was then
diverted because one demonstrator had cemented himself to the track.
