Re: Lab Coats

Bob,

You won't find specific NRC regulations requiring lab coats when
working with radioactive materials. It's likely to be handled in a
variety of ways, depending on what each institution has said to the
NRC or its agreement state licensing body. For instance, my institution
submitted its Radiation Safety Guide as part of its license application,
and our Guide specifies under what conditions protective clothing,
including lab coats, will be worn by researchers using RAM.
Consequently those lab coat requirements are part of our license
conditions.

No matter how you provide the information, the NRC expects a license
application to spell out details about an institution's radiation safety
program, including the use of protective clothing. See Reg Guide 10.5
(even more explicitly spelled out in proposed Revision 2 to Reg Guide
10.5).
