RE: Lab Coats
I am not aware of any specific requirement for lab coats, or other protective
clothing. The NRC or state regulators can always make contamination control a
part of the ALARA and Training Program requirements, but the regulators
generally do NOT tell a licensee HOW to meet a requirement, only that a
requirement must be met.
Requirements for PCs (protective clothing) is solely dependent on the
environment in which one works. The potential for contamination, and,
associated risk for internal deposition resulting in a CDE is the licensee's
responsibility. All of these issues should be addressed in the facilities General
Employee Training Program (or similar program) and be procedurally
addressed. Once the risks for contamination are known, what muct be worn
can easily be communicated to the work force.
However, the regulators have not made specific mandates, such as PCs, in any
regulation that I am aware of.
