Japanese Survivors Study -Reply
Joyce,
The number of survivors of the A bombs is a bit tricky. In its report 12, the
Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) used 86,572 of which 36,459
received doses of less than 0.5 rem. Several people were excluded because of
problems with the dose data. It is difficult to determine an average dose because
the RERF lumped together the 32,849 people with doses in the 0.5 to 10 rem
range. I am trying to break this group down a bit but have not succeeded. If your
interest is only in those with doses greater than 10 rem, the number is 17,264 and
the average dose is easy to determine.
