Radioactive ash from Spain to be treated like nuclear waste
More on the Spanish release:
MADRID, July 2 (AFP) - Radioactive ash that emanated from a
steel factory in southern Spain will be treated as if it were
nuclear waste, the country's Nuclear Safety Council promised
Thursday.
Juan Carlos Lentijo said all the ash had been isolated, some of
it in the steelworks itself and some in other installations, pending
disposal.
"It's obvious the ash is irradiated and that it will therefore
be treated in the same way as nuclear waste," he told AFP.
"Clearly it's impossible to take out 270 tonnes of ash from one
day to the next."
The leak at the factory in Algeciras was reported on June 12,
although it happened several days earlier. France, Switzerland,
Germany and Italy had all reported detecting higher than usual
levels of radioactivity before that.
It also prompted fears from some experts that winds could carry
clouds of cinders hundreds of kilometres (miles) across Europe.
Lentijo said an action plan to dispose of the ash would be
approved within a few weeks at the most.
The Council has already said that the radiation level did not
exceed 1.9 million becquerels per kilo, only a third of the level
deemed as dangerous to public health.
