EMF and Cancer
The issue of bias and press releases is an interesting one. I assume that
those commenting do not know the actual process that was followed. For
this panel, even though members requested the opportunity to review and
comment on the press release, it was written and released by the NIH staff
without input from the panel.
Similarly, when the NAS panel report was released in 1996, input was not
solicited and approval not sought by the members. Rather, the staff was
in charge. Many committee members felt that the press release did not do
justice to the content of the report and, in fact, understated the
conclusions. So bias can be perceived by either side and often the
outside observed is as biased as those on the inside.
