INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MEASUREMENTS OF OPTICAL RADIATION HAZARDS
NIST, Gaithersburg, MD, USA
1-3 September 1998
Overview:
Have you ever had to measure intense light sources (i.e. UV, visible,
and infrared) and evaluate the potential hazards to the eye or skin?
Are you familiar with the optical radiation exposure limits to
determine what levels are dangerous? Well, this symposium offers a
unique and rare opportunity to catch up on the latest developments in
this important field.
The objective of this "first-of-its-kind" international symposium is
in many respects tutorial, to promote improved, standardized
radiometric measurements of optical radiation hazards from
ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation sources. In addition, the
radiometric assessment of protective measures such as sunscreens,
clothing and eye protection will also be covered. To achieve this
goal, the first full day will be devoted to a review of the
photobiological basis of human exposure guidelines. The second day
will be devoted to the human health guidelines (exposure limits) --
their rationale and any remaining uncertainties. Then, on the third
day, actual measurements and instrumentation will be considered. This
unique symposium will have scheduled lectures, breakout/discussion
groups, posters, and abstract sessions. A host of related CIE
satellite meetings and task group conferences will take place before
and after the symposium. Any previous meeting dedicated to this
subject area is unknown; therefore, participation in this symposium
will offer a unique opportunity for the participants.
Audience:
Attendees should include but not be limited to: industrial hygienists,
health physicists, optical physicists, photobiologists, safety
engineers, and lighting engineers. This symposium qualifies for the
following professional certification maintenance points:
The American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) 3 IH CM points. Board
Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) 1 BCSP point.
Venue:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST),
Administration Building (101), Green Auditorium, Gaithersburg,
Maryland. Gaithersburg is conveniently located approximately 25 miles
northwest of Washington, DC. The location of the meeting offers easy
access from three airports: Baltimore-Washington International (BWI),
served by British Airways from London (LGW) and Loftlieder from
Luxembourg and Rekjavik; Dulles International Airport (IAD), served by
Air France from Paris, British Airways from London (LHR), Swissair from
Zurich and Geneva, United and other airlines with international
gateways; and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that has direct
connections from other US gateways such as Boston, Chicago, New York,
Newark, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Invitation To Contribute Abstracts For Posters: International speakers
working in various areas of Optical
Measurements and Photobiology have been invited to give lectures
throughout the symposium. A 150 word abstract and the completed reply
form should be submitted to the contact. Abstracts without a poster
presentation will be accepted for the proceedings with consideration
to subject matter and document space availability. The three major
symposium topics are:
The Photobiological Basis for Risk Assessment - Action Spectra
Photobiological Guidelines & Standards for Health
Protection and Product Safety
Broad-Band Measurements Needed to Apply Photobiological
Guidelines and Standards
The proceedings based upon this symposium will be published jointly by
the CIE and ICNIRP. For the symposium, each attendee will be provided
with a book of abstracts.
Related Meetings:
There will be a number of related meetings just before and after the
symposium. CIE Division 6, Photobiology and Photochemistry, will hold
its annual meeting on Monday morning, August 31, at NIST from 9:00 a.m.
to 12:45 p.m., with some CIE Technical Committees such as TC 6-45
(Optical Radiation Hazard Measurements in the Work Space) and 6-48
(Typical Minumum Erythermal Doses) meeting that afternoon. CIE TC6-47
(Photobiological Lamp Safety Standard) with IEC counterparts will meet
on Friday, August 28, in Baltimore, MD. Another CIE TC may meet on
Monday, August 31, or Friday, September. 4. An ICNIRP task group may
also meet in Baltimore on August 30. For more information, please
contact Stephen Wengraitis, listed in the Contacts section of this
brochure.

Coffee Breaks and Lunch:
Refreshments will be provided during morning, mid-morning, and
mid-afternoon breaks. A set-menu lunch will also be provided each day.
Social Event:
There will be a symposium reception at the Gaithersburg Hilton on
Tuesday, September 1, from 6-8 pm. During the reception, vendors will
have table-top displays to provide an opportunity for attendees to
become more aware of commercial measurement instruments and related
technology. For more information on vendor displays, please contact
Stephen Wengraitis, listed in the Contacts section of this brochure.
Accommodations:
Symposium registration does not include your hotel reservation. A
block of rooms has been reserved at the Gaithersburg Hilton, (301)
977-8900. The special room rate is $94, single or double, plus 12%
tax. To register for a room, please use the enclosed hotel reservation
card and send it directly to the hotel no later than Monday, August
10, 1998. After that date, the rooms will be released for general sale
at the prevailing rates of the hotel. If you phone in your
reservation, please refer to the "Measurements of Optical Radiaiton
Hazards Symposium."
Roundtrip transportation will be provided between the hotel and NIST
each day in the morning and evening. Attendees are encouraged to use
this service, as parking at NIST may be limited.
