Assistant Director of the Radiation Safety Program & Assistant Radiation
Officer-Department of Occupational & Environmental Safety-SG 16

Case Western Reserve University

Manage the daily operations of the University's radiation Safety Program to
comply with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Ohio Department of
Health (ODH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of
Transportation (DOT), and Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District
requirements.  Provide operational management support to the Director of
the Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety (DOES); maintain an
effective program in the Radiation Safety Officer's absence; promote CWRU
and regulatory policies and procedures; communicate with the Director of
DOES, the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management and
Operations, the Radiation Safety Committee, University Administration, and
the University community to constructively and instructively resolve safety
and compliance issues, communicate with the NRC and ODH in accordance with
regulations governing incident and emergency response; identify and
implement new initiatives for the Radiation Safety program; direct and
supervise radiation safety technicians to fulfill required duties of the
radiation safety program, evaluate reports of inspections for technical
correctness and completeness in accordance with regulatory requirements;
follow-up safety and compliance issues to ensure closure of corrective
actions on these issues; respond to radiological incidents and evaluate
reporting documentation with recommended corrective actions; administer
compliance programs for the use, storage, shipping, receiving, and
transportation and disposal of radioactive materials; authorize purchase of
radioactive materials; oversee procurement and inspection of radioactive
materials; provide appropriate training in radiation safety to students,
faculty and staff; provide services required by students, staff, and
faculty to assure safe working conditions with radioactive materials.

Experience:   Requires BA/BS in engineering, health physics or related
discipline; more than 8 years of experience with managing aspects of
radiation safety programs and more than 4 years experience as an
operational manager of a radiation safety program; excellent verbal,
writing and personal communications skills; good managerial skills,
detailed knowledge of Federal, state and local regulatory guidelines for
use of radioactive material; knowledge of waste management programs and
training in DOT and hazardous materials waste management. Ability to work
with and manage radiation safety office computer databases is also
required.
