Franz,

US atmospheric weapons testing ended in 1962.  A lot of I-131 was released into
the atmosphere;  Eisenbud and Gesell say over a ZBq.  Most of it was injected into
the stratosphere where it largely decayed before returning to earth.

As a good secondary reference, I recommend Eisenbud and Gesell's
"Environmental Radioactivity," 4th Ed. 1997.
