Re: Principal Investigator?

At the University of California, Irvine, a principal investigator on a
grant can be anyone from a senior faculty member to a junior postdoc (if
he/she has a faculty sponsor), so for radiation safety purposes, we use the
term "Responsible Principal Investigator" (RPI) for the person holding the
internal permit (Radiation Use Authorization) issued by the Radiation
Safety Committee. They are usually faculty members, but can be other
employees approved on a case-by-case basis (such as the RSO for our
calibration sources and the Hazardous Waste Manager for radwaste processing
and storage). A couple of University of California campuses use the term
"Responsible User" to get away from the Sponsored Research definition of a PI.
